Shreya Krishnan, the Managing Director of AnitaB.org India, is steering efforts to create a more inclusive and diverse technology landscape in India. AnitaB.org, a social enterprise with a global reach, advocates for gender diversity and inclusion in the tech sector, supporting women, non-binary individuals, and the companies that employ them. With a background deeply rooted in social impact and journalism, Krishnan is bringing her passion and expertise to make technology accessible and empowering for all.

From Journalist to Changemaker

Krishnan began her career in journalism after completing her studies in environmental sciences. She joined The Hindu, driven by a desire to bring attention to global issues. This early experience of storytelling around social impact led her to roles in renowned organizations, including the United Nations Environment Programme and Aon, where she headed marketing, communications, CSR, and diversity initiatives. Over time, Krishnan’s work aligned closely with the mission of AnitaB.org, which she joined formally in 2023 after being involved in advisory and ambassador roles.

Advancing Diversity and Inclusion in Technology

AnitaB.org, based in Chicago, is dedicated to increasing the representation of women and non-binary individuals in technology. Through its programs, initiatives, and events, the organization supports a global community of over 100,000 members, with around 6,000 members in India. The organization’s efforts include providing networking opportunities, offering resources for professional development, and fostering a community where women and non-binary technologists can thrive.

According to Krishnan, the tech industry has historically been dominated by a narrow demographic, which has led to the development of technologies that may not be fully inclusive or equitable. She emphasizes the need for diverse perspectives to create technology that serves everyone, explaining that when diversity enters tech, it becomes more intuitive and accessible for all. AnitaB.org’s mission centers on creating a tech ecosystem where everyone, regardless of gender identity, can feel represented and supported.

AnitaB.org India: Programs and Initiatives

Under Krishnan’s leadership, AnitaB.org India has initiated several programs to support women and non-binary professionals in tech:

  1. Community Building: AnitaB.org hosts in-person quarterly meetups across India, offering a space for women and non-binary individuals to connect, learn, and grow in their careers. The organization is also creating a STEM curriculum for young girls in Tier III and Tier IV towns, aiming to inspire future generations to pursue tech careers.
  2. Support for Organizations: AnitaB.org works with companies looking to enhance their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) goals. Partners include Sheroes, Aspire for Her Foundation, and Interweave, which collaborate on research and community outreach.
  3. Career Transition Programs: AnitaB.org offers resources for women reentering the workforce, including mentorship, learning programs, and assistance in securing new roles. Through its “Apprenticeship Pathway” program, young professionals gain hands-on experience and training before being absorbed into partner organizations.
  4. Research and Partnerships: The organization is conducting research with Parity, an equal-rights organization, on the challenges women face at mid-career stages. Collaboration with the Assistive Technology Foundation focuses on the unique needs of women with disabilities, particularly regarding career access and funding.
  5. Academic Engagement: AnitaB.org engages with academic institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), as well as community colleges in Tier II and III cities. Through workshops and interactive sessions, the organization aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM education.

Upcoming Grace Hopper Celebration India (GHCI)

After a five-year hiatus, AnitaB.org India is set to host its renowned Grace Hopper Celebration India (GHCI) from November 20-22, 2024, at the Bangalore International Convention Centre. Expected to attract over 15,000 attendees and 240 speakers, the event will highlight issues such as artificial intelligence and algorithmic bias. In preparation, AnitaB.org is conducting roadshows across 11 Indian cities to spark discussions on AI and inclusivity, expanding its reach and influence within the tech community.

Plans for 2025: Supporting Women Entrepreneurs

Looking forward, AnitaB.org India plans to introduce “Pitch Her” to India, a Shark Tank-style competition that enables women entrepreneurs to present their ideas to investors. This initiative aims to provide funding and mentorship to female-led startups, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to empowering women in tech and business.

Addressing Gender Bias in Language and Society

As an advocate for gender equality, Krishnan recognizes the pervasive influence of language in shaping perceptions. Together with Jacintha Jayachandran, she co-authored Words Matter: The Language That Girls Need to Speak, a book featuring 40 words meant to inspire girls to use empowering language. The book encourages readers to choose words that promote respect and equality, aiming to dismantle gendered biases and stereotypes.

Krishnan’s work also challenges societal expectations around women’s roles, particularly regarding financial independence. She notes that cultural biases can prevent women from achieving autonomy, as they are often encouraged to prioritize family responsibilities over career aspirations. To combat this, AnitaB.org provides tools and assessments for organizations to better align their ESG, SDG, and D&I objectives, supporting women in the workforce by advocating for systemic change.

A Vision for a More Inclusive Future in Tech

Krishnan envisions a future where women and non-binary individuals are equal stakeholders in the technology sector, contributing to an ecosystem that values diverse perspectives. Through AnitaB.org’s initiatives, Krishnan is working to ensure that the tech industry reflects the full spectrum of gender identities, building a more equitable and accessible world. As the organization continues to expand its reach and impact, Krishnan remains committed to advocating for a tech industry that empowers everyone, regardless of gender or background.

AnitaB.org India’s journey under Shreya Krishnan is an inspiring example of how one leader’s vision can drive meaningful change. With an unwavering commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social impact, Krishnan and AnitaB.org are paving the way for a more inclusive and representative technology landscape in India.
