Sraboni Haralalka, a literature graduate with a passion for finance, has risen as one of India’s most prominent women leaders in investment banking. Co-founding Wodehouse Capital Advisors in 2010 with Manmohan Tiwana, Sraboni has transformed her firm into a reputable player in the world of investment banking, strategic consulting, and multi-family office services. The journey from a love of literature to leading an investment banking firm showcases Sraboni’s determination, resilience, and ability to adapt in a predominantly male-dominated industry.

Early Life and Education: From Literature to Finance

Growing up in a business-oriented family, Sraboni was no stranger to discussions about numbers, markets, and business strategies around the dinner table. However, her first love wasn’t finance but literature. She pursued both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in literature, driven by a deep passion for storytelling and creativity.

Despite her academic background in the arts, Sraboni soon realized that the career opportunities in literature were limited. After completing her master’s, she decided to pivot towards finance, enrolling in an MBA program. Reflecting on this pivotal decision, Sraboni shares, “I was a good student, and I always understood and answered questions in science and math. At that point, I made a choice. I didn’t want to be a teacher—it didn’t excite me enough to pursue any of those professions. That’s when I decided I wanted to be in banking.”

This decision marked the beginning of Sraboni’s foray into the world of finance, a move that would eventually lead her to co-found Wodehouse Capital Advisors, a firm offering a wide range of financial services to businesses and individuals alike.

The Birth of Wodehouse Capital Advisors

In 2010, Sraboni co-founded Wodehouse Capital Advisors, alongside Manmohan Tiwana, her former colleague. The firm initially started with a focus on investment banking, offering services such as equity and debt solutions to help clients achieve their financial and growth objectives. By 2011, the firm expanded its operations to include mergers and acquisitions (M&A), making a significant mark in the Indian financial sector.

Wodehouse Capital Advisors offers three core services: investment banking, strategic consulting, and multi-family office services. Their investment banking arm focuses on providing bespoke financial solutions, including equity and debt financing. In strategic consulting, the firm helps businesses with buy-side advisory, India market entry, business restructuring, and real estate consulting. The firm’s multi-family office services identify investment opportunities tailored to meet the unique needs of their clients, assisting them in achieving both personal and business financial goals.

Breaking Gender Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

One of the challenges Sraboni encountered early in her career was the stark gender disparity in the investment banking industry. “Investment banking is a very male-dominated field. In our generation, you will see very few women at the top. But I would say women who are ten years younger than me, you’ll see more and more women at that level,” she reflects.

Sraboni shares her experience of attending meetings where promoters were often hesitant to address her directly, despite her expertise. She recalls, “I would start talking and then they would listen to me, but they were very uncomfortable dealing with women.” Despite these initial challenges, Sraboni’s competence and confidence soon broke down these barriers, as her knowledge and strategic insights won over clients and colleagues alike.

Today, Sraboni stands as an inspiration for younger women in finance, proving that gender is no barrier to success in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her ability to lead with creativity, empathy, and a strong value system has earned her respect across the industry.

Pioneering Deals and Leadership at Wodehouse Capital

Throughout her career at Wodehouse Capital Advisors, Sraboni has been instrumental in leading several high-profile deals. Some of her notable achievements include advising US-based Zeda on an acquisition, assisting Lifeline Diagnostics in the sale of their business, facilitating the strategic sale of SGK LABS, and helping Mahamaya Lifesciences raise funds through structured finance. These deals reflect Sraboni’s expertise in navigating complex financial landscapes and providing clients with tailored solutions that align with their business objectives.

A Balancing Act: Career and Personal Life

Beyond the boardroom, Sraboni has faced personal challenges that tested her resolve. After completing her master’s, she found herself preparing for an MBA entrance exam while nine months pregnant. Even after entering the professional world, she had to manage her responsibilities as a mother while moving to different cities for work. At one point, she had to relocate to Mumbai for six months, away from her child. Reflecting on that time, she says, “I thought that I don’t think I can have my baby and do an MBA and have a career. But my family–my in-laws and parents, supported me.”

Sraboni acknowledges the importance of having a strong support system and credits her family for helping her strike a balance between her professional ambitions and personal life. She believes that her success stems from a combination of hard work, honesty, and unwavering determination. “Honesty is extremely important. I have a strong value system centered around being truthful and honest as much as possible. I believe that the knowledge, empathy, network, and skills I bring to the job are more than enough to compensate for the fact that I’m not a male,” she asserts.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Women in Investment Banking

Sraboni is optimistic about the future of women in investment banking, noting that younger generations are increasingly breaking into leadership roles in the industry. She believes that the industry is evolving, and more women will be able to achieve leadership positions in the coming years.

Through her journey, Sraboni Haralalka has not only carved a successful career for herself but has also paved the way for future women leaders in finance. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability, and the courage to follow one’s passions, even when the path is unconventional.
