Breaking Barriers: From Small-Town Roots to Tech Leadership

Microsoft India’s Executive Director of Digital Natives, Sangeeta Bavi, looks back on her rise from modest origins in Sholapur, Maharashtra, to prominence in the tech sector. Bavi, who grew up in a place where everyone had high hopes, attributes her upbringing—which included a liberal mother and a powerful grandmother—for teaching her the value of having her own finances.

Choosing STEM: A Path of Elimination

Even though Bavi came from a medical background, she chose to pursue engineering instead of medicine. Her choice at REC Warangal (now NIT) to major in computer engineering was the catalyst for an incredible 24-year career in technology.

A Career Defined by Innovation and Collaboration

Bavi describes her many jobs and experiences in the tech industry in an exclusive conversation with HerStory. She went from working as a coder at Wipro to working with Nokia on ground-breaking projects like the creation of the USB and Bluetooth core stacks. She moved into product management with ease and was really happy in the position.

Pioneering Initiatives in Startups and Innovation

Following her path, Bavi ended up at Microsoft, where she oversaw programmes to support Indian companies. Her contribution to the creation of a playbook for fostering new companies led to Microsoft using it as a model worldwide. As the head of the digital natives business unit, Bavi drives innovation and growth throughout the area with an emphasis on early-stage initiatives, growth, and unicorn companies.

Championing Diversity and Inclusion in Tech

Bavi, a trailblazer in the tech sector, is aware of the obstacles that women must overcome to get to leadership roles. She stresses the value of initiatives and supportive workplace environments that help women manage their personal and professional lives. At Microsoft, programmes like interacting with former employees and offering mentorship opportunities are designed to enable women to get over self-doubt and follow their professional goals.

Empowering Women to Thrive in Tech

Bavi story is proof of the strength of perseverance, fortitude, and teamwork. As she keeps pushing for inclusion and diversity in the software industry, she sees a day when women will have the ability to succeed and take the lead in the rapidly changing tech sector.
