Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri’s new film Bad Newz, directed by Anand Tiwari, concluded its first week at the Indian box office on a slightly subdued note. While the film enjoyed decent performance in its opening days, Thursday saw a dip in earnings.
Steady Start, Slight Decline on Day 7
Bad Newz, which debuted on July 19, brought in ₹8.3 crore on its first day of sales. The amount increased gradually over the next three days, reaching ₹11.15 crore on day three and ₹10.25 crore on day two. Day four saw ₹3.5 crore, Day five saw ₹3.75 crore, and Day six saw ₹3.15 crore. On the other hand, weekdays saw a decline. The seventh day of the movie, Thursday, earned ₹2.85 crore nett in India, bringing the first week’s total box office receipts to an estimated ₹42.95 crore net, according to early estimates from Sacnilk.com. On Thursday, the movie’s overall Hindi occupancy was approximately 11.52%.
Critical Reception: Mixed Bag
Reviews for Bad Newz have been mixed. The Hindustan Times review pointed out the use of stereotypical tropes like the portrayal of Punjabis and the “momma’s boy” character. However, the review also acknowledged some clever meta jokes referencing Dimri’s “National Crush” status and Kaushal’s past roles.
A Spiritual Successor to Good Newwz?
The 2019 blockbuster movie Good Newwz, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, and Diljit Dosanjh, seems to have a spiritual sequel in Bad Newz. Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, Ammy Virk, and Neha Dhupia play the main parts in the new movie, while Ananya Panday and Neha Sharma make cameo appearances. The film, which was directed by Anand Tiwari and produced by Karan Johar, Amritpal Singh Bindra, and Apoorva Mehta, approaches the unique circumstance of heteropaternal superfecundation in a humorous way.
Story and Genre
Bad Newz dives into the chaotic world of heteropaternal superfecundation, a situation where a woman becomes pregnant with twins fathered by two different men. The comedy-drama follows the story of Triptii Dimri’s character, who finds herself in this predicament with characters played by Vicky Kaushal and Ammy Virk.
With the release of the highly anticipated superhero movie Deadpool & Wolverine this Friday, Bad Newz will face increased competition in the urban market. The film’s performance in the coming weeks will determine whether it can reach the ₹50 crore mark at the box office.
