The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled a significant pledge in its election manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi promises to extend health insurance coverage to all individuals aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Additionally, the manifesto emphasizes the launch of affordable insurance products to safeguard the interests of small traders and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Expanding Healthcare Coverage

In a bid to enhance the healthcare system and garner support from the elderly population, Prime Minister Modi has pledged to extend health insurance coverage to individuals aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This move is aimed at addressing the concerns of senior citizens regarding the affordability of healthcare, especially in light of rising health insurance claims post-Covid-19.

Ayushman Bharat Scheme

The Ayushman Bharat scheme, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), is the world’s largest government-funded healthcare program. Launched in 2018, it offers coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 12 crore vulnerable families. The scheme covers expenses such as diagnostics and medicines for up to 3 days pre-hospitalization and 15 days post-hospitalization, with all pre-existing conditions covered from day one.

Benefits for Seniors

Extending the coverage of the Ayushman Bharat scheme to individuals aged 70 and above will provide essential healthcare services to the elderly population in the country. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the concerns of senior citizens regarding the affordability of treatment for their ailments, particularly for those belonging to the middle class. By including seniors in the scheme, the BJP aims to alleviate these concerns and ensure access to quality healthcare for all.

Addressing Rising Health Insurance Claims

Health insurance claims have witnessed a significant increase over the past few years, particularly post-Covid-19, with a notable rise of 10-30% across all age groups. Senior citizens, in particular, face challenges due to high premiums and the prevalence of pre-existing ailments. The Ayushman Bharat scheme aims to bridge this gap by providing comprehensive coverage to individuals aged 70 and above, thereby addressing a critical concern for many in this demographic.

Affordable Insurance for Small Firms

In addition to healthcare coverage for seniors, the BJP manifesto also emphasizes the launch of affordable insurance products for small traders and MSMEs. These businesses play a vital role in the national economy but are often vulnerable to unexpected adversities such as fire, theft, and natural disasters. Affordable insurance products will provide these entities with a safety net to recover faster and continue their operations in the face of uncertainties.
