The 2024 Lok Sabha election results were a combination of victory and fierce competition, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) winning 292 seats. Despite forecasts that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would serve a third term, the INDIA alliance proved to be a powerful challenger, winning 232 seats. This electoral campaign represents a larger ideological conflict between the BJP and the INDIA alliance.

BJP’s Dominance and Narendra Modi’s Campaign

The BJP campaign, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was wide and vibrant. PM Modi attended more than 200 public meetings, including rallies and roadshows, to strengthen the party’s national presence. The BJP has set an ambitious aim of 370 seats for itself and 400 for the NDA, demonstrating its lofty goals and strategic efforts. Despite these efforts, the BJP had substantial problems, especially in Uttar Pradesh, where the INDIA bloc was particularly powerful. The INDIA bloc’s campaign included joint rallies with key opposition figures, emphasizing unity and a shared vision for India’s future.

Counting of Votes and Security Measures

Vote counting began at 8 a.m. under heavy security, with EVM votes counted 30 minutes after the postal ballots. This election was the second-longest in Indian history, behind the first election in 1951-52. To create a government, a party or coalition must win a majority of 272 seats, which the NDA easily achieves.

Sandeshkhali Victim, BJP’s Rekha Patra, Loses Basirhat by 3.3 Lakh Votes

In West Bengal, the BJP’s candidate from Basirhat, Rekha Patra, faced a significant defeat, losing to the Trinamool Congress’s candidate by a margin of 3.3 lakh votes. This result indicates a rejection of the BJP’s attempts to highlight the alleged sexual assault of women in Sandeshkhali as a key poll issue.

President Murmu to Dissolve 17th Lok Sabha Tomorrow, Cabinet Meeting Scheduled

President Droupadi Murmu is set to dissolve the 17th Lok Sabha following a cabinet meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has moved a note for this purpose, setting the stage for the formation of a new government. After receiving the cabinet’s recommendation, President Murmu will initiate the process of constituting the 18th Lok Sabha once the Election Commission submits the list of MPs.

The President would ask the single-largest party, the NDA in this case, to form a government at the Centre. By convention, the NDA must show its majority on the Lok Sabha floor within a month or fewer. Meanwhile, the INDIA group is attempting to create a coalition government with other like-minded parties. They are also attempting to woo NDA supporters such as Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has held the Baharampur seat since 1999, was defeated by former all-rounder Yusuf Pathan in the recent election. Chowdhury’s four consecutive Lok Sabha election successes came to a stop with this crushing defeat. The National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee, will fly to Delhi tomorrow to represent his party for the INDIA bloc conference. This gathering represents the Opposition’s continued efforts to strategize and strengthen their position in the face of the BJP’s supremacy.
