A BJP leader was recently arrested in Tripura for allegedly attacking a polling station presiding officer during the phase 2 elections for the Tripura East constituency. The incident came to light when a video showed Kajal Das, the head of the BJP’s North Tripura district, smacking the poll official went viral and was shared on social media.
Arrest of BJP Leader
After the video of the BJP politician Kajal Das attacking the poll worker went viral, she was taken into custody. The incident happened at Bagbasa Assembly Constituency Polling Station Number 22, and multiple other unidentified people were also observed assaulting the officer. In Dharmanagar, the assistant returning officer filed a complaint against Kajal Das.
Police Investigation
Upon receiving the complaint, authorities initiated an investigation into the matter. Jayanta Debnath, the officer in-charge of Kadamtala police station, confirmed that an inquiry was conducted based on reports from sector officers, micro observers, and the viral video. The investigation led to the filing of a case under relevant sections of the Representation of People’s Act and the Indian Penal Code.
Legal Action Taken
In addition to section 34 of the IPC (acts committed by multiple people in furtherance of a common intention), the case brought against Kajal Das also includes charges under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 131 of the Representation of People’s Act. Authorities reaffirmed their dedication to enforcing the law and making sure that justice is done.
