In 2020, Rahul Jain, Chaithanya Kothapalli, and Nita Gopalakrishnan formed Yunikee, an organisation based in Hyderabad that is transforming education for the deaf people in India. Their program, Sign Medium, provides Indian Sign Language (ISL) instruction in stock trading, yoga, English, and photography. With this project, people with hearing impairments will be able to develop their independence and acquire necessary skills.
Bridging the Educational Divide
Yunikee’s inspiration came from her own experiences with ISL. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nita Gopalakrishnan, who was reared by deaf parents, and Rahul Jain, who was also deaf, saw a lack of educational facilities. In order to meet these demands and provide easily available educational resources, they founded Yunikee.
The company’s Sign Medium initiative has had a big impact; classes like stock trading are drawing a lot of interest. Despite being different from spoken languages, ISL is essential for deaf community communication and is always changing thanks to contributions from the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC).
Overcoming Challenges
Convincing businesses to make their products accessible to the deaf community is a problem that Yunikee must overcome. The organisation aims to inform clients about the potential market within this demographic and to showcase the advantages of inclusion.
Looking Ahead
Yunikee is dedicated to growing its product line and carrying out its goal of educating and empowering the deaf population. They are establishing a benchmark for inclusive education and opportunity for anyone with their creative approach and commitment to ISL.
