IMD Alerts: Severe Cold Wave and Heavy Rainfall

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for severe cold wave and extremely heavy rainfall across several Northern Indian states. The forecast includes a wet spell over the Western Himalayan Region from January 29 to February 3, with the possibility of heavy rainfall on January 30 and 31.

The IMD also cautioned about very dense fog and severe cold day conditions expected to persist in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar over the next two days, gradually improving thereafter.

  • Moderate rainfall or snowfall predicted in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh over the next 7 days until February 3.
  • Heavy rainfall or snowfall anticipated in Kashmir on January 30 and 31, and in Himachal Pradesh on January 31.
  • Moderate rainfall or snowfall expected in Uttarakhand, with light rainfall over Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh from January 31 to February 2.

Cold Day and Dense Fog Conditions

  • Severe Cold Day conditions likely to continue in isolated pockets of Bihar from January 29 to 31.
  • Severe Cold Day conditions expected in some parts of Uttar Pradesh on January 29.
  • Dense fog conditions very likely in various regions including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, north Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Cold Wave and Minimum Temperature

  • Severe Cold wave conditions likely to continue in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal on January 29.
  • Minimum temperatures expected to rise by 2-4°C in many parts of Northwest India over the next 4-5 days.
  • Minimum temperatures anticipated to rise by 3-5°C in East India and 2-4°C in West India over the next 3 days.

Delhi Weather Forecast

Delhi experienced a temperature of 9°C on January 29 morning, with the IMD predicting mainly clear skies. Rainfall and thunderstorms are forecasted in Delhi on January 31 and February 1.

Impact on Transportation

Train services at the New Delhi Railway Station were affected due to bad weather, leading to the cancellation of the 20808 Hirakund Express and delays for trains like 04449 New Delhi to Kurukshetra Junction and 12011 Kalka Shatabdi Express.
