The Foundation for Innovation and Research Support (F.I.R.S.T) at IIT Kanpur signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ASEAN Economic Community Forum (AECF) on Monday, marking a crucial step to improve startup ecosystems throughout Southeast Asia (ASEAN) nations. The signing ceremony was held in Da Nang, Indonesia, during the India-ASEAN Scaleup Programme 2024.
Enhanced Access to Technology, Markets, and Business Connections
Professor Ankur Sharma, In-Charge of SIIC (F.I.R.S.T) at IIT Kanpur, and Sachin Gopalan, Director of the AECF, signed the MoU. This collaboration aims to enhance access to technology, market opportunities, and valuable business connections for startups in ASEAN countries.
India-ASEAN Scaleup Programme Fosters Innovation and Collaboration
The India-ASEAN Scaleup Programme, funded by the Government of India through the ASEAN-India Science and Technology Development Fund, is a collaborative effort supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of External Affairs, and organized by F.I.R.S.T., IIT Kanpur. The program promotes India-ASEAN partnerships through science, technology, and innovation-driven activities across the ASEAN community. These endeavors aim to strengthen economic ties, encourage innovation, and promote sustainable development between ASEAN member states and India.
Connecting Startups with Growth Resources and Investors
According to IIT Kanpur, 40 promising companies from a variety of industries were present at the event, together with a delegation of high-ranking stakeholders from the Indian innovation ecosystem. Through the platform, high-growth firms were able to expand their businesses throughout ASEAN markets by networking, collaborating, and receiving mentorship and resources. During the closing ceremony, distributors and channel partners heard investor pitches from startups, who also won many awards. This program is in line with AECF’s mission to support innovation and entrepreneurship while strengthening public-private partnerships to have a greater social and economic impact.
Prominent Figures Participate in the Initiative
Isyant N. Khobragade, Ambassador of India to ASEAN, participated in the program and commended the organizers for a successful event. Representatives from India’s National Research and Development Agency (NRDA) and the ASEAN Economic Community also actively participated. The program included panel discussions, roundtable talks, startup pitches, and one-on-one networking sessions with channel partners.
