At a recent promotional event in Chennai, Kamal Haasan shared details about the upcoming film Indian 2 with director Shankar and other celebrities. The highly relatable subject of “Indian Thatha”—fighting corruption in Indian politics—will receive fresh attention in the sequel, which is slated for release on July 12, 2024.
Kamal Haasan thanked filmmaker Shankar in his speech for giving him the unique chance to retell this stirring story. Haasan drew comparisons between film industry luminaries such as Cecil B. DeMille and Alfred Hitchcock, who brought back their classics, and Shankar’s contribution to bringing Indian 2 back to life in the face of the prevailing socio-political climate.
Stressing the significance of the movie’s theme, Haasan jokingly complimented the growing corruption in Indian politics for allowing ‘Indian Thatha’ to make a comeback. In Tamil cinema’s history of social commentary, this character—known for its vigilante retribution against systematic corruption—has a particular place.
Concerns concerning the similarity of Shankar’s narrative style—which was reminiscent of his earlier hits like Mudhalavan, Gentleman, and Anniyan—were voiced during the discussion of the film’s premise. But Indian 2 promises a combination of star power and gripping storytelling, with an ensemble cast that includes Nedumudi Venu, Vivekh, Bobby Simha, Rakul Preet Singh, Priya Bhavani Shankar, and Kajal Aggarwal. The soundtrack is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
Prior to the release of Indian 2, Kamal Haasan is expected to enchant audiences in Kalki 2898 AD, Prabhas’s eagerly awaited film, which opens on June 27. In Indian cinema, Haasan’s adaptability and timeless appeal are highlighted by this dual presence.
Watch this space for Indian 2, which is gearing up to take theatres by storm and promises to deliver a powerful blend of entertainment and social commentary via the prism of ‘Indian Thatha’s’ unyielding struggle against corruption.
