On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally opened the new Nalanda University campus in Rajgir, Bihar. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,749 crore, this cutting-edge campus reflects India’s rich educational legacy and is situated next to the ancient Nalanda University’s historic ruins.

A Historic Milestone

An important step towards resurrecting the university’s history from the fifth century has been reached with the inauguration. Prior to the event, PM Modi went to the historic Nalanda University archaeological site, which is home to stupas, shrines, viharas, and elaborate metal, stone, and stucco artwork.

Modern Facilities and Green Design

With two academic blocks and forty classrooms, the new campus can house about 1,900 students. It also has two 300-seat auditoriums and a hostel that can accommodate about 550 students apiece. A faculty club, a sports complex, an international centre, and a 2,000-seat amphitheatre are among the other amenities.

The university is self-sufficient and environmentally sustainable because to its “Net Zero” green campus design, which includes solar plants, drinking and household water treatment facilities, a water recycling facility, and 100 acres of water bodies.

Revival of an Ancient Legacy

When it was first established in the fifth century, the original Nalanda University was a globally recognised hub of scholarship. Before being destroyed by invaders in the 12th century, it flourished for eight centuries. The location’s historical and cultural significance was recognised in 2016 when it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2014, Nalanda University was reestablished and started with just 14 students in a temporary facility. Inspired by its illustrious past, it today stands as a beacon of academic achievement and a cultural rebirth.

Inauguration Ceremony

Several dignitaries, including S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, and the heads of missions from 17 different nations attended the occasion. A commemorative plaque was unveiled by PM Modi, along with a sapling planted to represent the institution’s expansion and sustainability.

A Collaborative Vision

Together, India and the nations of the East Asia Summit (EAS) are reviving Nalanda University. Through this cooperation, the university’s position as a hub for global learning will be strengthened and educational and cultural exchange will be encouraged.

Future Prospects

The new Nalanda University campus is positioned to become a preeminent educational establishment that promotes research, innovation, and global collaboration thanks to its cutting-edge infrastructure and dedication to sustainability. The campus is positioned as a paradigm for future educational endeavours because of its modern facilities and green efforts, which combine historical veneration with current progress.

Impact on Global Education

Redefining higher education globally is a major step closer with the opening of the new Nalanda University campus. The university is positioned as a leader in both academic and environmental excellence because of its emphasis on sustainability and state-of-the-art facilities.

Remarks from PM Modi

He underlined the importance of sustainable development as well as the university’s capacity to rise to prominence in the global academic community.
