Since President Joe Biden decided to drop his reelection campaign and support U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris instead of Republican Donald Trump, she has gained a tiny advantage. Recent polling by Reuters/Ipsos on Monday and Tuesday indicates that Harris is leading Trump 44% to 42%, a margin that falls within the poll’s 3-percentage-point error range.

Recent Poll Trends

The results of last week’s poll, in which Biden trailed Trump by two percentage points before declaring his withdrawal from the race on Sunday, are significantly different from the new one. The survey was conducted after Biden endorsed Harris and Trump formally accepted his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention.

Voter Sentiment and Candidate Perception

When it comes to mental acuity and task-solving skills, Harris is regarded more highly than Trump and Biden. According to the survey, 56% of registered voters think Harris is “mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges,” compared to 49% who think the same of Trump and just 22% who think the same of Biden. This impression probably played a part in Biden’s decision to resign.

Democratic Support for Harris

With 91% of Democratic voters thinking highly of Harris and 80% of them thinking favorably of Biden, Harris has substantial support inside the Democratic Party. Approximately 75% of Democratic voters think that the party should rally around Harris instead of having several contenders vie for the nomination.

Impact of Third-Party Candidates

In a hypothetical scenario including independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Harris maintains her lead over Trump, 42% to 38%. Kennedy, who has yet to qualify for the ballot in many states, is favored by 8% of voters.

Battleground State Focus

Harris has been actively campaigning in critical battleground states, such as Wisconsin, where she has garnered support from key party figures. Attention is now on her potential running mate. However, many voters are unfamiliar with the leading candidates for the vice-presidential spot.

Potential Running Mates

The poll indicates that many voters lack knowledge about potential Democratic vice-presidential picks. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a former presidential candidate, has the highest favorability rating among them at 37%. Other potential candidates include California Governor Gavin Newsom, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, but many respondents were not familiar with these figures.
