With cutting-edge robotic solutions, Solinas Integrity, an innovative firm nurtured at IIT-Madras, is leading the way in revolutionising urban sanitation. The firm, which was co-founded by Divanshu Kumar and Moinak Banerjee, intends to end manual scavenging while tackling important problems with India’s urban infrastructure, such as leaks, blockages, and contaminated water.
From Innovation to Entrepreneurship
Innovation has the ability to change lives, as demonstrated by Divanshu Kumar’s path from an ambitious mechanical engineering student at IIT-Kanpur to co-founding Solinas Integrity at IIT-Madras. In his last year, Kumar started a project to build robots to clean septic tanks and manholes. However, his ambition went beyond the classroom to address practical sanitation issues.
“During our project presentations to manual scavengers in Chennai, their scepticism pushed us to delve deeper into developing viable solutions,” says Kumar. This crucial turning point accelerated the development of their initial prototype into workable robotic systems designed for the varied metropolitan environment of India.
Innovative Solutions for Urban Sanitation Challenges
Solinas Integrity’s flagship products include HomeSep and EndoBot, designed to enhance efficiency and safety in sanitation operations:
- HomeSep: The first robotic septic tank and manhole cleaning system in India, furnished with suction mechanisms, cleaning blades and transportation choices to reduce the need for physical involvement.
- EndoBot: A sophisticated “endoscopy” robot that can examine drainage, sewage, and water pipelines. EndoBot facilitates preventive maintenance and quick repairs by offering comprehensive data on pipeline conditions, flaws, and blockages.
“In addition to these innovations, we are developing the Rehabilitation Bot (R-Bot) to clean horizontal sewer pipelines efficiently, filling a critical gap in current sanitation practices,” says Kumar.
Collaborative Efforts and Impact
Solinas Integrity collaborates extensively with municipalities, private companies, and governmental bodies to deploy its technologies effectively:
- Swasth Dashboard: A cloud-based artificial intelligence platform that incorporates EndoBot data for real-time pipeline evaluation, risk assessment, and fault coding. With the aid of this technology, stakeholders may anticipate problems with sanitation and make well-informed decisions.
“Our partnerships with private players and government initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission underscore the growing demand for innovative sanitation solutions,” says Kumar. These partnerships not only improve operational effectiveness but also make a substantial contribution to environmental sustainability and water conservation efforts.
Expansion and Future Prospects
With solutions implemented in more than 15 cities throughout nine states in India, Solinas Integrity is well-positioned to grow into other foreign markets, including as Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The startup has collected a significant amount of money in a number of rounds to expand its business and take on bigger infrastructure projects.
“Our strategic focus is on transitioning from smaller contracts to larger-scale projects, aligning with India’s ambitious urban development agendas,” says Kumar. This expansion plan seeks to increase revenue streams while furthering the goal of Solinas Integrity, which is to use innovation and technology to revolutionise worldwide sanitation standards.
Driving Change in Urban Sanitation
Solinas Integrity is a prime example of how technology may revolutionise the way we tackle persistent problems with urban sanitation. The firm is improving the sustainability and effectiveness of urban infrastructure by removing manual scavenging and utilising robotics, data analytics, and cooperative collaborations.
Solinas Integrity’s dedication to environmental stewardship and social impact is unwavering, even as it innovates and grows its business. The transition from university to entrepreneurship highlights how innovation may help create a safer and more environmentally friendly future for urban areas all across the world.
