CPI(M) Backs Congress in 16 Lok Sabha Seats

In a significant development, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in Telangana has announced its decision to extend support to the ruling Congress party in 16 out of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state for the upcoming parliamentary elections. This decision was confirmed by the state secretary of CPI(M), Tammineni Veerabhadram, following a meeting with Chief Minister and state Congress president, A Revanth Reddy, on Saturday.

Support for Congress in Bhongir Constituency

During the meeting, CPI(M) leaders discussed their party’s participation in the Bhongir constituency. While CPI(M) had initially planned to contest in Bhongir, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy urged the party to withdraw from the contest and extend support to Congress instead. Although no final decision has been made regarding this proposal, CPI(M) has expressed its intention to remain in the fray in Bhongir until a formal decision is reached within the party.

Broader Objective of Defeating BJP

The overarching objective behind CPI(M)’s decision to support Congress is to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from gaining ground in Telangana. This move aligns with the broader strategy outlined by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to consolidate anti-BJP forces and ensure victory for the Congress-led alliance in the state.

Electoral Landscape in Telangana

Telangana boasts a total of 17 Lok Sabha seats, out of which Congress secured 3 seats in the previous elections, while the then ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) managed to clinch 9 seats. The BJP made significant inroads by winning 4 seats, albeit with a vote share of 19.65%. On the other hand, CPI(M) failed to make a substantial impact, with its vote share remaining below 1%.

Congress’ Stronghold in Assembly Elections

The Congress party’s resounding victory in the recent assembly elections has bolstered its position in Telangana. With A Revanth Reddy at the helm, Congress aims to capitalize on its electoral success and emerge victorious in the Lok Sabha elections as well.

Conclusion

As the Lok Sabha elections draw near, CPI(M)’s decision to throw its weight behind Congress underscores the importance of strategic alliances in the political landscape of Telangana. With the objective of thwarting BJP’s advances and consolidating anti-BJP forces, CPI(M) aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the electoral outcome in the state. Stay tuned for further developments as the political scenario continues to evolve in Telangana.
