The outcome of the Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha elections for 2024 spells disappointment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led INDIA alliance secures a clean sweep, clinching victory in all 39 seats. Despite optimistic projections, the BJP failed to make significant gains, facing setbacks across the state.

BJP’s Struggle in Tamil Nadu

Contrary to exit poll forecasts of a probable BJP breakthrough in Tamil Nadu, the party’s performance fell short of expectations. The BJP’s solitary victory in the state came in 2014, when Pon Radhakrishnan won in Kanniyakumari. However, by 2019, the party’s vote share had dropped to a meager 3.66 percent, indicating a decrease in its political fortunes.

INDIA Alliance Dominance

The DMK-led INDIA alliance’s comprehensive victory underscores its strong foothold in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The alliance’s success extends beyond the Lok Sabha seats, with a triumph in Puducherry as well. The BJP’s inability to secure significant wins highlights the challenge it faces in establishing a formidable presence in the state.

Notable Losses for BJP

In Coimbatore, BJP state chairman Annamalai was defeated, causing a setback for the party’s leadership. Other major NDA candidates, including former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam in Ramanathapuram, suffered election defeats. The failure to win in important constituencies highlights the BJP’s struggle to connect with Tamil Nadu voters.

DMK’s Electoral Dominance

The DMK’s triumph in the 2024 elections strengthens its status as the major political force in Tamil Nadu. Despite facing stiff struggle in the past, the DMK-led Congress alliance virtually won the state in 2019, taking 38 seats. This time, the DMK is expected to win in typically difficult areas, further cementing its electoral domination.

AIADMK’s Decline

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), once an ally of the BJP, failed to secure any victories after parting ways with the NDA last year. Former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s defeat to IUML’s Navaskani highlights the AIADMK’s dwindling electoral fortunes, signaling a decline in its political influence.

The Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 reflect the BJP’s struggle to make inroads in the state’s political landscape. While the DMK-led INDIA alliance celebrates a resounding victory, the BJP faces the challenge of regaining lost ground and strengthening its presence in Tamil Nadu’s electoral arena.
