Delhi Metro Assures Passengers Safety

A video circulating online on Monday sparked panic among some Delhi Metro commuters after it showed what appeared to be a fire erupting from the roof of a train headed towards Vaishali. Thankfully, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) quickly issued a clarification, assuring passengers that the incident was not a cause for concern.

DMRC Explains the Incident

In an official statement, the DMRC explained that the video depicted a common phenomenon known as “pantograph flashing.” This occurs when external or foreign objects become lodged between the overhead equipment (OHE) and the pantograph, which is the apparatus mounted on the roof of the train responsible for collecting electricity. The DMRC emphasized that pantograph flashing poses no safety threat to passengers.

The Incident at Rajiv Chowk Station

The DMRC’s statement elaborated that the viral video originated from an incident at Rajiv Chowk station on Monday evening, around 6:21 PM. The train in question was headed towards Vaishali when the pantograph flashing event took place. The video captured the event, showing sparks and a brief flicker of light emanating from the roof, which some bystanders might have misinterpreted as a fire.

DMRC’s Response and Train’s Continued Journey

The DMRC swiftly took action to address the situation. The affected pantograph was promptly taken out of service. Technicians then conducted a troubleshooting procedure using the train’s remaining pantographs, which took approximately five minutes. Following the successful troubleshooting, the train was able to resume its journey towards Vaishali as per its usual schedule.

Delhi Metro: A Lifeline for Delhi and NCR

The Delhi Metro has become an indispensable part of life for residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Since its inauguration in 2002, the Delhi Metro network has significantly expanded, boasting a vast network of about 392.44 kilometers and encompassing a staggering 288 stations. The first operational corridor of the Delhi Metro commenced service on December 25th, 2002, stretching between Shahdara and Tis Hazari.

The Delhi Metro caters to a massive ridership, annually transporting a whopping 700 million passengers. This figure surpasses the entire population of the United States, highlighting the immense scale and significance of the Delhi Metro within the Indian capital and its surrounding regions. The prompt response by the DMRC to the viral video and their detailed explanation regarding the pantograph flashing incident demonstrate their commitment to passenger safety and transparency. The DMRC continuously strives to ensure a safe and reliable travel experience for all commuters.
