Pune has once again become the focus of a drug-related issue after a video purportedly showing two young people doing drugs in the restroom of a well-known hotel on Ferguson Road went viral. Opposition politicians have taken aim at the Maharashtra administration and raised grave concerns about public safety and law enforcement in response to this occurrence, which has sparked a political firestorm.

The Viral Video Incident

A video purportedly showing two young people using drugs in the restroom of a well-known hotel on Ferguson Road has gone viral, placing Pune at the heart of another drug-related scandal. A political firestorm has been sparked by this occurrence, with opposition politicians accusing the Maharashtra government of being behind the scenes and seriously questioned about public safety and law enforcement.

Government and Law Enforcement Response

In response to the viral video, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Gill provided an update on the actions being taken. He mentioned that around 40 to 50 people were present at the hotel at the time of the incident, partying beyond the permitted hours. The main entry to the L3 bar was reportedly closed at 1:30 AM, but guests were allowed in through a secondary gate.

As of now, five individuals have been detained, and the process to seal the bar is underway. Additionally, two bit-marshals from the police force have been suspended. This swift action comes amid growing criticism and scrutiny from the public and political figures alike.

Opposition’s Criticism and Demands

The opposition has been vocal in its criticism of the Maharashtra government and Excise Minister Shambhuraj Desai. Ravindra Dhangekar, the Congress MLA from Kasba constituency in Pune, accused the government of neglect and corruption. He highlighted the issue of minors being exposed to drugs and criticized the authorities for their alleged inaction.

Dhangekar stated, “A pub in Shivajinagar area remains open till 5 AM, and videos of minors consuming drugs in that pub are going viral. Are the state excise officers sleeping when drugs in such large amounts are being consumed?” He urged the minister to take immediate action against the responsible officers, warning that failure to do so could result in the loss of his ministerial position.

Allegations of Corruption and Political Protection

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare raised further questions about the lack of investigation into certain excise officers allegedly involved in the drug trade in Pune. She claimed that these officers have not faced any consequences due to political protection. “Let alone investigation or suspension, but he is not even transferred?” she asserted.

Anand Dubey, another leader from Shiv Sena (UBT), expressed disappointment over the increasing drug-related incidents in Pune. “Pune is slowly becoming a hub of the drug and liquor mafia, but the government isn’t doing anything. What can we do about the Union Home Minister, who is busy breaking up the parties? I request him to save Pune,” Dubey told PTI.

Government’s Promised Inquiry and Actions

In response to the growing outcry, Excise Minister Shambhuraj Desai has ordered a thorough inquiry into the matter. Pune MP and Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol has also taken a firm stance, instructing the Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar to immediately suspend inspectors from the police station within whose jurisdiction the incident occurred. Mohol, who is also a former Pune Mayor, emphasized the seriousness of the situation and called for strict action against the operator and owner of the hotel.

Public Reaction and Broader Implications

The public reaction to the viral video and subsequent political drama has been intense. Many citizens are calling for greater accountability and transparency from both law enforcement and political leaders. The incident has also sparked a broader discussion about drug use and enforcement in Pune, highlighting the need for more effective measures to curb illegal activities and protect the youth.

The recent incident involving youngsters consuming drugs in a Pune hotel has not only tarnished the city’s image but also exposed potential gaps in law enforcement and political accountability. As the government promises a thorough investigation and swift action, the public and opposition leaders remain vigilant, demanding real changes and effective solutions to prevent such incidents in the future. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in addressing drug-related issues and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
