Menstrual Cups Offer Sustainable Period Care in Indian Village

In honor of World Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28, 2024), the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has launched an effort that has significantly improved the management of menstrual hygiene in rural India. A key player in this accomplishment was MildCares, a startup housed in the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur.

MildCares Paves the Way for Sanitary Pad-Free Village

Women in the Uttar Pradesh village of Aminabad Urf Baragoan received menstruation cups made by MildCares called GynoCup. An important first was that the ladies in the hamlet were successfully converted to menstruation cups thanks to this program. Aminabad Urf Baragoan is currently acknowledged as the first “sanitary pad-free village” in Uttar Pradesh as a result.

A Sustainable and Cost-Effective Solution

According to a press release issued by IIT Kanpur, MildCares’ GynoCup offers a viable alternative to traditional disposable sanitary pads. These menstrual cups are:

  • Reusable: Unlike disposable pads, menstrual cups can be used for several menstrual cycles, making them a more cost-effective option in the long run.
  • Cost-Effective: The reusability factor significantly reduces the financial burden associated with purchasing disposable pads every month.
  • Eco-Friendly: Sanitary pads generate a considerable amount of non-biodegradable waste. Menstrual cups, on the other hand, are a more environmentally friendly choice as they can be reused for an extended period.

Improved Menstrual Hygiene and Health

The press release from IIT Kanpur further highlights the advantages of menstrual cups beyond cost and sustainability. They offer several health benefits for women, including:

  • Reduced Risk of Infections: Menstrual cups create a barrier that collects menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it, potentially lowering the risk of infections compared to disposable pads.
  • Enhanced Comfort and Hygiene: Menstrual cups can provide a more comfortable and hygienic experience during menstruation compared to disposable pads.
  • Better Menstrual Health Management: By offering a reliable and long-lasting solution, menstrual cups can empower women to manage their menstrual health more effectively.

IIT Kanpur’s Commitment to Social Change

The accomplishment of this project in Aminabad Urf Baragoan demonstrates IIT Kanpur’s commitment to promoting constructive social change. The institution is actively encouraging solutions that address important concerns faced by communities, especially in rural regions, by funding creative entrepreneurs like MildCares. Even though this program is a big start in the right direction, there are still obstacles in the way of menstruation cups becoming widely used in India. Their acceptance may be hampered by the stigma associated with menstruation and a lack of knowledge regarding menstrual cups.

A Model for the Future

The initiative in Aminabad Urf Baragoan serves as a successful model for promoting menstrual hygiene management in rural India. By combining innovative solutions like menstrual cups with educational programs and community outreach, similar initiatives can be replicated across the country. This can empower women in rural communities to manage their menstrual health effectively while contributing to environmental sustainability.

Aminabad Urf Baragoan’s success story could serve as an inspiration for similar projects throughout India. Organizations such as MildCares can increase the number of women who adopt menstruation cups by working with NGOs, healthcare facilities, and governmental bodies. As a result, women in these areas may have a healthier future and menstrual hygiene management practices in rural India may significantly improve.
