A request for bids to create and run a space-based Earth observation (EO) system has been made by Indian startups and commercial firms to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe). This ambitious project intends to design, build, and launch a constellation of satellites outfitted with state-of-the-art imaging technologies. It will be carried out within a public-private partnership (PPP) framework.

A Leap Towards Self-Reliance

In order to address the growing demand for Earth observation data, IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka stressed the project’s importance in building a self-sufficient, reliable, and sustainable Earth observation system. In order to promote a robust space economy, IN-SPACe and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have joined forces to launch the program.

Key Components of the Project

  • Satellite Constellation Design and Construction: Developing satellites capable of achromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, and microwave imaging.
  • Launch and Operations: Utilizing Indian launch vehicles for satellite deployment and ensuring spacecraft health monitoring and data transmission.
  • Ground Station Establishment: Setting up ground stations or leveraging existing ground stations as a service (GSaaS) providers.
  • Data Processing and Analysis: Converting raw satellite data into valuable insights for various applications.

Eligibility Criteria and Incentives

In order to partake in this revolutionary project, candidates need to fulfill certain financial requirements. Indian startups can qualify with a lower threshold of INR 42.5 crore, however the average need is an investment of INR 85 crore. As an alternative, businesses that are valued at INR 850 crore or that have generated INR 200 crore in revenue on average over the course of three years are qualified.

The chosen candidates will benefit greatly from this endeavor. They will have the chance to make money off of space data and associated services, which will broaden their customer base and strengthen India’s standing as the world’s leader in the geospatial industry.
