Recent surge in attacks sparks concerns and condemnation
The White House has issued a strong condemnation of recent attacks on Indian students in the United States, emphasizing that violence based on race, gender, or any other factor is “unacceptable” and will not be tolerated. This statement comes amidst growing concerns and anxieties within the Indian community following a spate of violent incidents targeting Indian and Indian-American individuals.
White House Response
Reacting to a reporter’s inquiry about the attacks, John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, reiterated the Biden administration’s commitment to tackling such violence. He acknowledged the concerns expressed by parents regarding the safety of their children studying in the US and affirmed the administration’s efforts to collaborate with state and local authorities to prevent and prosecute these acts.
“There’s no excuse for violence, certainly based on race or gender or religion or any other factor,” Kirby stated. “That’s just unacceptable here in the United States and the President and his administration has been working very, very hard to make sure we’re doing everything we can to work with state and local authorities to try to thwart and disrupt those kinds of attacks and make it clear to anybody who might consider them that they’ll be held properly accountable.”
Recent Attacks
These condemnations come in response to a string of disturbing incidents involving Indian and Indian-American victims:
- Vivek Taneja: A 41-year-old Indian-origin man succumbed to his injuries on February 7th after being brutally assaulted in Washington D.C. on February 2nd.
- Syed Mazahir Ali: An Indian student in Chicago was brutally attacked on February 4th, leaving him with severe injuries.

Community Concerns and Responses
These incidents have understandably evoked fear and apprehension within the Indian community in the US. Many parents have expressed reservations about sending their children to study in the United States, citing safety concerns. Indian student groups and organizations have also spoken out, demanding increased security measures and stricter action against perpetrators.
Looking Ahead
While the White House condemns these attacks and pledges to work with local authorities, much remains to be done to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian and Indian-American communities in the US. Addressing hate crimes, strengthening inter-community dialogue, and fostering inclusivity are crucial steps towards creating a safer and more welcoming environment for all.
